About Morgan's Sweets Emporium
Morgan’s Sweets Emporium is a traditional sweet shop in Appleby-in-Westmorland, on Boroughgate. This is how it came to be.
The Accidental Sweet Shop Owner's
Our Story
Our family relocated to Appleby while searching for the ideal community for our son, Morgan, as he transitioned into adulthood. We hoped to find a supportive environment within Cumbria and the Lakes—somewhere that matched his unique strengths and needs. Appleby quickly became that place.
Drawn in by the warmth of the town and the people who live and visit here, we made Appleby our home. During this time, an unexpected opportunity arose: the chance to purchase a sweet and toy shop. We decided to rename it in honour of Morgan, creating a space that would support his future and allow him to develop skills, independence, and confidence.
Morgan has faced significant challenges due to having Down’s Syndrome, hearing loss, and a speech impairment. Yet he approaches life with remarkable resilience and positivity. He is already well known throughout Appleby, and visitors often spot him around town, greeting familiar faces and enjoying the community that has embraced him.
We buy through trusted UK confectionery wholesalers and choose sweets from makers who have not changed their recipes, such as Walkers’ Nonsuch, Dobson’s and Jameson’s. If a sweet has been reformulated, we will check it personally for quality and stop stocking it if it does not compare to the original.
Everything is portioned by hand, in the shop, on the day it is packed. That is slower than a machine, and it is the reason people keep ordering.
Why Morgan's
Heritage first
Every line has been made in Britain for decades. We do not stock novelty imports or anything that trends.
Curated, not everything
Every variety chosen one at a time. If it is not good, it does not go on the wall.
Hand-portioned
Staff weigh and pack each order in the shop. No pre-bagged mixes sitting in a warehouse.
Traditional makers
Mostly British manufacturers, most family-run, several over a century old.
Who makes our sweets
We buy through trusted UK confectionery wholesalers, choosing ranges from long-established makers like these. Most have been making the same lines for over fifty years, and several are still family-run. We order in small batches so the jars turn over quickly.
A historic market town
Appleby sits on a loop of the River Eden in the Eden Valley, with a Norman castle at the top of Boroughgate and the June horse fair that fills the town once a year. Good walking, good shops, and us on the way through.
Appleby Castle
Norman keep and grounds at the top of Boroughgate, five minutes from the shop.
Riverside walks
The Eden loops the town. Flat, easy paths from the Sands.
Boroughgate shops
Independent shops and cafes along the old market street.
Heritage makers to visit
The Colour Makers House
Artists’ pigments made by hand the medieval way, from ochres, minerals and cochineal, in a Grade II-listed 1677 townhouse at 2 High Wiend. Pop in for a daily demonstration or book a small hands-on workshop.
Westmorland Rope Company
Handmade rope, now at the Old Post Office on Boroughgate, on the same street as us: scramble nets, rope bridges, swings and bespoke ropework for playgrounds, gardens, gyms and film sets, with over 40 years’ experience. Visitors welcome. As seen on Celebrity Traitors this season.
